Online betting has become legal in many states in the US and each state has the ability to license and regulate betting sites. While most of the attention has been placed on the offering of online sports betting, you can find some sites where legal online casinos are operating. No matter how you choose to wager, you can enjoy legal action in most of the US states.

Here, we take a look at where you can bet on sports and where you can enjoy real money casino games. Keep in mind that you must be physically located in the state where you are betting. This will be confirmed with the use of geolocation software. If you reside in a state where betting is not yet legal, you do have the option to wager at offshore sites that accept US members.

  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia

Possible States to Legalize Sports Betting in 2021

Many more states are working on legalizing online betting and you can expect more options to become available in 20201. Michigan is a state that has already passed legislation to allow wagering, but the official launch has not happened. It is due in early 2021. Two other states that have already passed laws include North Carolina and Washington.

Louisiana, South Dakota, and Maryland are also in the process of finalizing laws to allow for legal sports betting. In addition, a number of states have legalized the operation of retail sports betting locations, but have not solidified the laws in regards to an online launch. These states include Arkansas, Delaware, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, and New York.

Legal Online Casinos in US

You can also legally enjoy online casinos in a few of the US states. Back in 2013, New Jersey was the first state to legalize online gambling and launched multiple casino sites. Today, this state has many great sites that are associated with land casinos in Jersey. More than 20 operators are now live in New Jersey, offering the chance to play some of the greatest games from leading software providers. After New Jersey successfully launched online gambling, other states followed suit. Here is where you can now wager and win online:

  • Pennsylvania – In July of 2019, Pennsylvania launched the first online casino, 6 years after New Jersey. The state legalized online gaming in 2017, but the sites did not go live for 18 months. Now, Pennsylviania is home to more than 10 PA online casinos.
  • Michigan – In 2019, Michigan online casinos were legalized though it took some time for them to launch. The state tried to open a few sites in 2020, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The first online casino went live in January 2021. Nine brands launched on the same day and the state laws allow for a maximum of 15 sites to operate.
  • Delaware – Delaware, along with New Jersey, legalized online casinos in 2013. Since this is such a small state, there are not many options. In fact, there is a monopoly that is run by 888.
  • West Virginia – In the 2020s, West Virginia online casinos started operating and the first to enter the market was DraftKings Casino. This was followed by BetMGM. Under current laws, as many as 15 legal casinos will be able to operate within the state.

Compared to online sports betting, the options for wagering at online casinos in the US are very limited. However, some other states are taking steps to legalize online wagering for casino game enthusiasts. Nevada is one of these states. Here, online poker and sports betting is already offered, so you can expect online casinos to soon become part of the mix. Other states that may introduce online casinos include Illinois, Indiana, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Virginia.
