New Jersey was one of the first states in the US to legally launch online casinos. Websites that prepared for their launch were required to apply for a license from the Division of Gaming Enforcement and in February of 2013, 12 casinos located in Atlantic City has applied for a license to operate online gambling platforms. The news of legalizing online casinos was huge and all eyes were on New Jersey.

As platers started to prepare for the opportunity to play real money games online, operators began creating secure platforms and the Division of Gaming Enforcement prepared a synchronized launch of NJ casino sites to take place on November 21, 2013. Six Atlantic City casinos worked to launch platforms and bring online gambling to New Jersey residents.

First Year of Launch

Right after online gambling was legalized in the state, six major casinos had applied for and received licenses. These included Borgata, Harrah’s, Caesars, Tropicana, Trump Plaza, and Trump Taj Mahal. These six casinos delivered 7 online websites for casino games and 6 online poker rooms.

Initially, Golden Nugget was expected to take part in the synchronized launch but technical issues prevented this from happening. It was another three weeks before players saw Golden Nugget appear online once it passed testing. It officially launched on December 13, 2013.

Throughout the first year of online casinos being available. Technical issues remained a problem. Sites were having trouble with geolocation software that verified the location of players. Since the laws state that only those located in the state of New Jersey are allowed to engage in real money play, the issues with the software presented some major problems.

Within one week of launching, Trump Taj Mahal and Trump Plaza shut down, leaving a few online casinos without a land-based affiliate. These sites included Ultimate Casino and Ultimate Poker as well as Betfair Casino and Poker. By November 2014, there were 8 operating online casinos and five poker rooms available in the state.

Online Casino Success

The decision to allow online casinos to operate in the state of New Jersey proved to be a successful one. While struggling during the second year, casinos that were already licensed started generating revenue. Over the next few years, additional sites started to launch. Today, the online gambling industry in New Jersey is one of the largest and most successful in the country.

Between 2013 and 2018, the state generated $259.3 million in tax revenue and over 6550 jobs had been created. Today, players in New Jersey have access to 32 operating sites, all of which offer top games from trusted providers, amazing bonus deals, and secure access. These casinos also offer mobile platforms that allow members to play their favorite games on the go.

The initial launch of casinos in New Jersey was the stepping stone for generating revenue. Since 2013, the state has been able to benefit from revenue earned and provides players with a safe and easy way to engage in real money play.

To be able to enjoy the thrills of online gambling, one must be at least 21 years of age and use geolocation software to prove they are physically located in the state. The industry is constantly evolving and there are plans for new casinos to launch in 2022, adding to the great array of options that gamblers will have. New Jersey takes all steps to provide a secure environment online for players and provides responsible gaming tools to mitigate gambling addictions.
