Online casinos that are operating legally are all monitored by a regulatory agency to ensure they operate according to laws and industry standards. When you are choosing a real money online casino site that is up and running in the United States, you will want to take some time to learn about who monitors the sites and whether it is safe to play at.

In the United States, the online gambling industry is booming and many new casino sites are emerging. Each of these sites is required to be licensed and regulated. The US Government allowed individual states to oversee the operation and licensing of online sites. This means that instead of having one large regulatory body, online casino sites are monitored by individual states.

US States with Licensed Casinos

In 2013, the United States Government started to allow individual states to license online gambling venues. Delaware was one of the first to pass laws that would legalize online gambling for residents. However, this state was not the first to launch a site. New Jersey was actually the first state in the country to offer an online gambling venue to residents.

In November of 2013, six casinos based on Atlantic City launched online casinos, including Borgata, Harrah’s, Caesars, Tropicana, Trump Plaza, and Trump Taj Mahal. Other sites quickly launched the following month and over the years many more have started operating in New Jersey.

Aside from Delaware and New Jersey, there are other states in the country where online gambling has been legalized and players can access licensed casino sites. At this time, residents from Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia all have access to legally operating casinos that accept online real money wagers.

Each state that has licensed online gambling is required to have a regulatory body in place that oversees the operation of the casino and ensures it operates legally and ethically. The independent bodies currently active in the United States include:

  • New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement
  • Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board
  • Michigan Gaming Control Board
  • West Virginia Lottery Commission
  • Delaware Division of Gaming Enforcement
  • Department of Consumer Protection Gaming Division

What Regulatory Bodies Do

Regulatory bodies are put in place to make sure the business operates ethically and within the scope of the law. They make sure that players receive their money and ensure that all operating casinos are financially upstanding. These bodies also exist to manage any disputes between an operator and a player. States that license online casinos make sure they offer customer support and compliance measures so that players always have ways to settle issues if they are to arise.

Each regulatory body or gaming board in US states will have the right to issue licenses to online casino sites. They are also responsible for ensuring that all sites comply with laws and provide the proper levels of protection for all registered members. The board will enforce all rules and laws that are in place.

As more states in the US work towards legalizing online gambling they will have to make sure that a regulatory body is in place, In most cases, these are already active as they oversee other forms of gambling, such as state lotteries that are offered. These exist to make sure that players have access to fair games, secure environments, and trusted methods to manage real money accounts. Any casino that wishes to operate in a US state is legally required to obtain a license from that state and adhere to strict guidelines and rules at all times.
